A1 Assessor Award – Professional Programme
What is the programme all about?
This much sought after programme offers you the chance to gain a professional qualification and is ideal for people who would like to develop their professional assessor skills. In addition to enabling you to enhance your general assessment skills it enables you to conduct assessment for vocational qualifications.
In addition to providing you with a unique case based learning programme we also support your development by providing you with a step by step assessor’s toolkit. The toolkit provides you with progressive assessment guides to steer you through the assessment process via guided assessment activities.
The A1 Assessors Award is primarily for those wishing to assess NVQ qualifications however the award provides you with the essential assessment skills and knowledge to support assessment across all spheres of competency assessment.

Our guide provides you with a detailed mapping of the required knowledge and performance criteria you need to demonstrate your competency. This systemised and cross-referenced method enables you to produce exactly the right quantity and quality of evidence to achieve your award. The guide enables you to utilise the evidence you produce to maximum effect reducing the time and effort you have to spend in assembling your portfolio.
The taught element of the programme and the guidelines provides you with an unambiguous step by step route to demonstrate your competence in:
w Developing plans for assessing competence with candidates
w Judging evidence against agreed standards to make assessment decisions
w Giving candidates feedback and support on your assessment decisions
w Contributing to the Internal quality assurance process
A1 Assessor Award is a generic award and therefore provides you with a qualification that you can use across all your areas of professional competency and is therefore only constrained by your own personal skills level. For example, you may be undertaking the award to enable you to assess accountancy however if you are also a competent plumber, manager, joiner you will also be able to assess these areas as well.
The award therefore gives you considerable scope for professional development as you can transcend disciplines and skills barriers that may have previously obstructed your progression. Therefore as a trainee assessor we would expect you to have suitable experience and qualifications for your chosen assessment subject areas.
What will I study?
The A1 Assessor Award comprises of four level 3 elements namely:
1. Element A1.1: Develop plans for assessing competence with candidates.
2. Element A1.2: Judge evidence against criteria to make assessment decisions.
3. Element A1.3: Provide feedback and support to candidates on assessment decisions.
4. Element A1.4: Contribute to the internal quality assurance process.
How long is the programme?
The taught element of the programme is 16 hours split over 3 tutor lead sessions; however you will need to put a portfolio of evidence together which may take anything from 1 month to a year. How quickly you can achieve this will depend very much on you commitment and opportunities to collect evidence.
You will be required to undertake work at home and workplace but you will be provided with a tutor who can support your portfolio development.
